Darjeeling Purple Tea is produced at the Gopaldhara Tea Estate, situated in Darjeeling at an altitude of 5,500 to 7,000 feet. The quality of the tea leaves is so exceptional that they are primarily hand-sorted, with minimal use of machinery. Only the leaves exhibiting a distinct purple hue are harvested by the most skilled workers, overseen by the estate manager. The pluckers are meticulous, ensuring that only the finest shoots with prominent purple buds and leaves are selected. This tea undergoes no oxidation, which helps preserve its natural antioxidants and polyphenols, making it one of the healthiest tea options available.
Like all tea varieties, purple tea is derived from the Camellia sinensis plant, but this particular type is cultivated from a specially mutated Assam cultivar. The plant thrives under intense sunlight, leading to elevated levels of anthocyanins and polyphenols. The new growth displays a striking purple color, unlike the typical green of standard Camellia sinensis. The high concentration of anthocyanins in the leaves contributes to the tea’s unique purple appearance; these antioxidants are also responsible for the vibrant colors of blueberries, raspberries, and other red or purple foods. Anthocyanins possess numerous medicinal properties and are recognized for their benefits in combating cardiovascular diseases.
The antioxidants found in the leaves are believed to offer anti-cancer advantages, enhance vision, and help lower cholesterol and regulate blood sugar levels. The flavor of this tea is sweet and not overly rich. While the tea itself has a dark hue, the infusion is light with a subtle purplish tint. We found its taste reminiscent of a robust white tea, characterized by a pleasant profile that does not resemble the typical flavors of black or green tea. It is free from astringency and tannin bitterness. Adding a few drops of lime transforms the liquor into a stunning pink color.
